Home News Quilts and thread crafts to be displayed at 2022 Heritage Needlework Guild’s Quilt and Needlework Show during AppleJack Festival September 8, 2022 in News Be a part of the celebration of two lifetimes of quilting and needlework during the Heritage Needlework Guild’s Quilt and Needlework Show Sept. 16, 17 and 18 held in conjunction with the 2022 AppleJack Festival in Nebraska City. Amid the scores of quilts and needlework on display during this annual show will be several works of this year’s Featured Guild Artist Lois Whitehead of Sidney, Iowa, as well as the 2022 Featured Guild Member Phyliss Masters of Syracuse. For the past 30 years, Whitehead has been an avid quilter and rug hooker. A member of the Heritage Needlework Guild since 2005, she likes to try new techniques such as applique and English paper piecing. A visit to her home reveals stacks and stacks of colorful quilts, a testimony to her many years of passion and skill for this art. Like many young girls in her generation, Featured Guild Member Phyllis Masters was an enthusiastic 4-H garment sewer, winning Blue Ribbons at county and state fairs. Later, Masters sewed clothes for her three daughters and taught sewing as a 4-H leader. Her quilting journey began in 1991 when she took her first quilting class and learned to use a rotary cutter. Since then, she’s taken many more classes and taught several herself. A career highlight for Masters was her work with Jo Morton, Nebraska City’s most famous quilter, in Jo’s “Saturday Sewers” group. Over the course of a decade, this group pieced hundreds of quilt blocks, many of which were published in Jo Morton’s books. The beautiful work of these two members will be on special display during the show. Show Info at a Glance: The 2022 Quilt and Needlework Show features the amazing fabric, thread, bead and yarn art of the Heritage Needlework Guild members. On display will be bed quilts, wall quilts, table runners and toppers, needlework, needle art, wearable items and bead work. Show dates are September 16, 17 and 18. Show hours are Friday 4 – 7 p.m. Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Viewed as one of the biggest displays of quilts and needlework items in southeast Nebraska, it is held in the lower level of the Bethel United Church of Christ at 2400 Central Ave., Nebraska City. The show is handicapped accessible with plenty of free parking. Admission to the show is $5 with proceeds assisting the Guild with its many community service projects. Two big features of this Quilt and Needlework Show are the Raffle Quilt and the Raffle Baskets. This year’s Raffle Quilt is a 77” by 92” quilt called “Modern Vintage Postage Stamp.” The individual quilt blocks were machine pieced by Guild members. The blocks were then assembled into a quilt top by Anna Sasse, Pat Fiorese and Marilyn Masker-Allen. The entire quilt was machine quilted by Sarah Velder. Raffle Baskets full of fabric, yarn, pattern books and ‘sewing goodies’ are assembled by Guild members. Many follow themes such as Baby, Christmas, Huskers, etc. Tickets for both raffles are $1 each or 7 tickets for $5 and may be purchased from Guild members or during show hours. Winning tickets are drawn at the end of the show on Sunday and winners will be notified. ———————–Established in 1984, the Heritage Needlework Guild is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to contribute to the growth and knowledge of needlework techniques, textiles, patterns and history by providing educational meetings, travel and fellowship.
